Scott Maurer - Senior Pastor

Thanks for taking a minute to get to know me.  I grew up in the busy suburbs of Northern Virginia.  My spiritual search took me on a very long journey through various religions and philosophies, rock bands, college, business, and a lot of other searching for truth.

In my mid-20s, I came to realize that the truth was in Jesus.  Honestly, that’s the last place I would have thought I would find the truth.  As a skeptic, I was very suspicious of the claims of Jesus – and I didn’t think much of Christians either, frankly.  But years of unsuccessfully looking for spiritual meaning in a lot of different places finally led me to investigate the Jesus of the Bible with a more open mind.  When I started really considering what the Bible said, I was amazed to find out that so many of the things I had thought about Jesus and the Bible were really not true.  I remember praying as I read the Bible, “Jesus, if you are real, make yourself known to me.”  And He did!!  I gave my life to Him, and some years later God called me into ministry.

I had a graduate degree from a prestigious university and a good job in the high tech business sector, but God had other plans for my life.  So I left the business world, did my seminary work, and went into full-time ministry.  My family and I were called to Brookings in June of 2009, and Bethel is an incredible church to pastor.  I have a wife Julie, daughter Sarah, and son Cole who are all invaluable partners in ministry.

My passion is to see lives transformed by the saving grace of Jesus Christ.  If God can work in the life of a messed up, rebellious, skeptical guy like me, I promise He can work in your life too.  I hope you’ll visit us at Bethel - we would certainly welcome you.  We’re just a bunch of imperfect people who God loves anyway.  I’d love to meet you and get to know you.  Feel free to contact me at pastorscott@brookings.net, or call the church office at 605-692-2858 – I’ll look forward to it!
